Audio: 05-1, 05-2, 05-3
课文 (Kèwén) - Text

Translation
When I first arrived in Beijing, I heard a cross-talk show that said Beijing people's pet phrase is "Have you eaten?" Later I discovered that actually, the phrase Beijing people love to say most is "We'll talk about it later."
I boarded a CAAC flight in Hong Kong. The person sitting next to me asked me in perfect English: "Are you going to Beijing for work?" "No, to study!" I answered. He was Chinese. We chatted happily all the way like this. Before getting off the plane, he also gave me a business card and invited me to visit his home when I had time.
The second weekend after arriving in Beijing, I called this gentleman I had met on the plane. He said enthusiastically on the phone: "Come to my home when you have time." I immediately became happy and said: "Great! When should I come?" He paused for a moment and said: "Work has been too busy lately, we'll talk about it later." However, almost every time I called, he would say he welcomed me to his home, while at the same time adding the phrase "we'll talk about it later."
I started thinking, didn't he say I could come when I had time? How could he be so insincere?
After three times of "we'll talk about it later," I finally went to his home. Both he and his wife were very warm, buying groceries and cooking, preparing a full table of food and drink that let me eat my fill. In the end, he also gave me many books. I glanced roughly at the price - over 500 yuan - and said: "You're giving me such expensive books, I must pay you." He said calmly: "These books are all useful to you. As for the money, we'll talk about it later." After that, I mentioned paying him for the books many times, and he always said: "We'll talk about it later."
During my days in Beijing, I often heard the phrase "we'll talk about it later." It made me feel not just polite refusal, but more a warm sense of waiting.
That day, I got on the subway at Jianguomen. This was my first time taking the subway since coming to China; I had never taken the Chinese subway before. There were many people on the train. After getting off the subway and coming up to ground level, I discovered that wasn't where I wanted to go, because I couldn't find the familiar Bus 375 stop. Just as I was looking around, two young men behind me took the initiative to greet me, but I didn't acknowledge them. After a while, they saw I was still standing there and asked me where I wanted to go. I asked them how to get to the Bus 375 stop. They said the Bus 375 stop was at Xizhimen, and here was Fuxingmen - still far from Xizhimen. When they learned I wanted to go back to school, they said: "Get in the car, we happen to be going toward the Summer Palace, we can take you part of the way." I hesitated for a moment before getting in their car. I didn't speak the whole way because I didn't want to deal with people I didn't know. When I got out at the school gate and took out money to give them, the two young men said with a smile: "We're not a taxi, we're just giving you a ride on our way, how could we take money?" Hearing their words, my heart warmed, and I hurriedly expressed my thanks, asking them their names and where they lived. But they had already started the car and waved at me saying: "Who knows, maybe we'll meet again in the future, we'll talk about it later." With that, they drove away. I stood there dumbfounded, not knowing what to say. To this day, I haven't seen those two warm and friendly young men again.
I still have a long time to study and live in Beijing. The days of dealing with Chinese people are still long, and I may encounter many more interesting things. Let's also say "we'll talk about it later."
